SSI’s commitment to cybersecurity continues with the Securing Your Business Advice Series. This week’s topic is Avoiding Data Breaches in Your Business.
“Most data breaches are the result of human intervention, and there are ways that you can equip your team to make better decisions,” says Austin Jabs, SSI Chief Security Officer
Our team knows that keeping your business secure is critical. This series walks through how to strengthen your team to reduce the likelihood of data breaches, the cost of a breach, and the main causes of data breaches, and how to avoid them.
Avoid Data Breaches in Your Office
According to Mitnick Security, 83% of companies have experienced at least one cybersecurity attack. The number one cause of business data breaches is phishing emails. AAG reported that there are an estimated 3.4 billion spam emails sent every day. Nefarious attackers use social engineering emails to convince recipients to compromise their credentials, click links to use back doors, and offer monetary gain, all in an attempt to gain access and steal sensitive information.
Not only are phishing emails the most common source of data breaches, but they also lead to the costliest data breaches. Two other sources of the most expensive data breaches are Business Email Compromises and Social Engineering.
Detecting & Recovering from a data breach
It takes 258 days to identify and contain a data breach. That time to detection decreases 61 days for businesses with extended detection and internal response systems in place, says the IBM Report: Escalating Data Breach Disruption Pushes Costs to New Highs. According to IBM, businesses with Security AI & Automation have saved organizations nearly $1 million in breach costs.

“The most important aspect to remember when considering securing your data is that security is a process, not a product," says Austin Jabs, SSI Chief Security Officer. Implementing these tools and empowering your staff is the first step to truly securing your business.
